They quarry landscaping rocks nearby. You can see the rope that someone climbs to hammer away at the rockface. The bundled rock is in the lower left.

The caverns were used by Civil War soldiers from the south to get chemicals to make gunpowder. The soldiers used their torches to write on the cave walls.
