These guys also have to work with a material called castable. It is a pliable heat-resistant type of cement that is used in place like here, in burner throats.

Here, the floor forms have been removed and the floor supports itself. It is remarkably strong as you can see the mason and inspector stand comfortably on it!

Brick is installed in concentric rings from the outer edge to the center and the floor arches up to support itself so the wood forms can be removed.

Once the supporting bricks for the arch floor are installed at the wall, a temporary wood frame is set up to support the suspended arch brick floor until the final "key blocks" are installed to lock the floor bricks in place.

Before the new fire brick is installed, the metal shell is sand blasted and primed to prevent or restrict rust. Insulation and brick thickness is generally a little over one foot thick as can be seen in the dark ring at the outer edge on the floor.

All the refractory removed to the main steel furnace shell.

As the defective fire brick is jack-hammered out, it falls by an access hatch making for easy removal.

I stuck my head in the hearth door and aimed my camera through the dim dusty light in the right direction. I listened while a contractor with his head in the door on the opposite side banged on the floor with a sledge hammer. When I heard the noise of the slipping bricks, I pressed the shutter button.

Deconstruction begins. Self-supporting brick arch floors that divide the individual burning hearths are removed.
